Internet of Things

In brief, Internet of things is the network of home appliances or things around you which are hooked up via internet with the help of sensors or API’s to exchange some data. IoT helps in connecting some standard devices such as laptops, smartphones, and desktops to any other electronic devices with no internet connectivity which can be observed and controlled remotely.

In the new age of connectivity, the demand for IoT (Internet of Things) is increasing at a significant pace as consumers, businesses, and government organizations are recognizing the importance of connecting physical devices to the internet.

How Does the Internet of Things Work?

A full-proof IoT application has 4 main component:

  • Sensors/Devices: Sensors are the integral part of an IoT application. Sensors help in collecting data from the environment and transmitting it to the devices. Sensors have the capability to sense the real time data and transmit the data into the machine under stable codes. A number of specific purposes of sensors are available, such as measuring temperature, humidity, vibrations, motion, light, pressure, altitude and color.
  • Network/connectivity: Data received from the sensors; need to be sent to the cloud through network connectivity. It may be a cellular, Satellite or Wifi connectivity or connecting directly to the internet via Ethernet.
  • Data processing: Data is the glue of the Internet of Things, the first step towards action and intelligence. The collected data needs to be stored and processed via APIs.
  • User interface:The final component is how the collected data is showcased to the end user. User interface needs to be very appealing for both web based as well as app based. An user must also be able to get an alert through email/text etc.
